Position Summary:

The McLean Game Refuge is searching for four (4) Summer Forest Rangers to complete its 2018 Summer Forest Crew. Under the direction of the Game Refuge Director, the Summer Forest Rangers will aid in the research, education, conservation, and maintenance activities of the Refuge for the summer of 2018. Applicants must be current undergraduate students pursuing a course of study in forestry, environmental studies, biology, botany, outdoor recreation, or other related field. Recent college graduates may also apply given they are pursuing a career in a related field. This position is designed as an internship to provide professional skills for a future career in an environmental field. This is a 10-week program, beginning June 1 and Ending August 17.

Timing:

  • Work will begin on Friday June 1, 2018 with an all-day first aid training
  • Scheduled dates of no work: June 7-8, June 11-15, July 4
  • Work will end Friday August 17, 2018
  • Employees will be expected to be fully ready for work by 9AM
  • Work days will end at 4:30PM
  • A 30-minute lunch break will be taken each day
  • All planned vacation must be communicated during application process

Duties:

  • Remove debris and other obstacles from roads and trails
  • Collect GPS data for GIS mapping projects
  • Collect and interpret tree core samples
  • Maintain Refuge boundaries using mapping and signage
  • Interact with visitors in the Refuge, providing information and encouraging visitors to adhere to Refuge rules and policies
  • Clean and maintain equipment
  • Perform other similar physical and clerical tasks under the guidance of the Director

Additional Requirements:

  • Arrive on time and consistently and clearly communicate with Director about work availability
  • Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor
  • Come to work prepared with appropriate tools, equipment, and attire (boots and long pants must be worn at all times)

Experience/Education:

  • Applicants must have completed or be pursuing a college degree in forestry, environmental studies, biology, botany, outdoor recreation, or other related field.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated work or volunteer experience in an environmental, conservation, or outdoor recreation field

Compensation:

  • The 10 week internship pays a stipend up to $4,186 (estimated 46 days)
  • Compensation will be paid on an hourly basis at a rate of $13/ hour
